Remote jobs for beginners: where to start with no experience

By HRjobs · · 6 min read

Short answer

The remote roles most open to beginners are customer support, virtual assistant, data annotation, content moderation and junior sales (SDR) jobs. They value clear written English, reliability and a good internet connection more than a degree. Expect strong competition, so a short, tailored application and a small proof of skill (a sample reply, a short task) make the difference.

Roles that often hire beginners

These roles regularly accept applicants without previous remote experience:

  • Customer support: answering customer questions by chat and email, often with paid training
  • Virtual or executive assistant: managing calendars, inboxes and travel for a busy person
  • Data annotation and AI training: labelling images, text or audio to train AI models
  • Content moderation: reviewing posts against a platform's rules
  • Sales development (SDR): researching and contacting potential customers

What employers look for instead of experience

For entry-level remote work, employers mostly check three things: that you write clearly, that you'll show up reliably during the agreed hours, and that your setup (laptop, internet, quiet space) works. Show all three in your application.

How to stand out with no experience

  • Mention transferable experience: retail, call centres, tutoring or volunteering all involve customers and deadlines
  • Include a tiny work sample, such as a polite reply to an angry customer email
  • State your internet speed and backup plan (for example a mobile hotspot)
  • Say exactly which hours you can work in the employer's timezone

Beginner jobs are where most scams are

Scammers target beginners with “no experience needed, high pay” offers. Never pay for training, equipment or a “starter kit”, and be wary of interviews held only over chat apps. Read our guide to remote job scam red flags before you apply widely.
