How much timezone overlap do remote jobs require?

By HRjobs · · 4 min read

Short answer

Most remote teams ask for 3 to 4 hours of overlap: the working hours you share with your team each day. Some roles, like customer support or assistant jobs tied to one manager, need 6 hours or more. Async-first teams need little or no overlap. The job post usually states it as a UTC range or a named timezone.

What timezone overlap means

Overlap is the part of your working day that falls inside your team's working day. It's when meetings, quick questions and handovers happen. A job can be open worldwide and still expect you online during US mornings, so overlap matters as much as location rules.

Typical overlap by type of role

These are common patterns, not fixed rules:

  • Engineering and design: 2 to 4 hours, often fewer at async-first companies
  • Customer support: a full shift that matches when the customers are online
  • Executive and virtual assistants: most of the manager's working day
  • Sales: the hours when prospects in the target market are reachable
  • Writing and content: often fully async

How to work out your overlap

Convert the team's hours to your timezone, then compare them with the hours you can realistically work. For example, a team working 9:00–17:00 in London is online 14:00–22:00 in Pakistan (UTC+5) during winter.

The free HRjobs timezone overlap checker does this for you and shows the shared hours on a 24-hour timeline.

If your timezone is far from the team

Look for jobs marked async or with a UTC range that includes your timezone. In your application, state the hours you can work and give an example of how you've handled handovers in writing. It removes the employer's biggest worry about hiring far away.
