Remote software development jobs: how to get hired across borders
By HRjobs · · 6 min read
Short answer
Remote software teams hire developers who can work independently and communicate in writing. Beyond technical skill, show a public track record (GitHub, a live project, or detailed case studies), explain trade-offs clearly in writing, and target companies that hire worldwide or in your region. Expect a take-home task or live coding, followed by a system design or code review discussion.
What remote engineering teams look for
Remote teams can't tap you on the shoulder, so they hire for:
- Strong fundamentals in your stack (for example React and TypeScript, or Python and SQL)
- Clear written communication: pull request descriptions, design docs, async updates
- Ownership: shipping a feature end to end, including tests and monitoring
- Experience with the team's tools: Git workflows, CI/CD, issue trackers
Build proof, not just a CV
A short case study often beats a long list of technologies. Pick one or two projects and describe the problem, your approach, the trade-offs and the result. Link to code or a live demo. Well-written pull requests in open-source projects are strong evidence of how you'll work on a remote team.
Typical remote interview process
- Intro call about your experience and the role
- Take-home task or live coding session (good employers pay for long take-homes)
- Technical discussion: system design, code review or debugging
- Final call about working style, hours and expectations
Where to look
Filter for jobs open worldwide or in your region, and check the working hours. Many engineering teams are async-first, which makes timezone differences easier. Browse remote software engineering jobs on HRjobs to see who can apply, the hours and the pay for each role.
